"Karla Homolka is not living in Chateauguay," insisted Lt. Larry Tremblay of the local police department on Wednesday. "You can kill the rumor. It is completely ridiculous."
That morning, some worried residents contacted Le Soleil to see if the rumor was well-founded. According to hearsay, Homolka had dyed her hair jet black, had adopted the alias of "Emilie Tremblay", and is living close to St. Willibrord School.
Lt. Tremblay explained that if Homolka had indeed moved to Chateauguay, the local police department would have been notified. "We would have received documents to that effect, because she must check in with the police station where she is living. But we've received nothing," he assured.
Behind bars since 1993 for her role in the murders and rapes of two teenage girls (Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffey) and her own sister Tammy, committed in Ontario in conjunction with her husband Paul Bernardo, Homolka, 35, was released from Ste-Anne-des-Plaines penitentiary last July 4 after 12 years in jail. Bernardo is still in prison.
Prison authorities indicated that Homolka would be living on the island of Montreal, a condition that would appear to exclude Chateauguay. Homolka had expressed a preference to live in N.D.G., but many residents of that area have protested her projected presence there.(Tr: D.R.)
