The theft took place on Jan. 18, between 3:50 p.m. and 4 p.m., when the Chateauguay resident went to the restroom in the mall. Once inside the stall, she hung her handbag on a hook provided for that purpose. A few minutes later, the woman noticed that her bag had vanished.
According to Chateauguay police agent Nathalie Langevin, it is clear that the woman had been followed for awhile. "During the day, the shopping centre is very populated with senior citizens who are more vulnerable," Langevin explained. "Some people are aware of this and they take advantage of it to commit this type of theft."
The policewoman, who conducts crime prevention workshops for elderly people, emphasizes the importance for women to always keep an eye on their handbag.(Tr: D.R.)
